How to maintain a resin bound driveway

A resin bound driveway is one of the lowest-effort surfaces you can lay. There are no joints to weed and no loose stone to rake, so most of the upkeep is a brush now and then and a rinse a couple of times a year. Done lightly and regularly, it keeps the drive looking new for years.

How do you maintain a resin bound driveway?

You sweep it when leaves or grit gather, and wash it down a few times a year. That is the whole job. Because the surface is bound and jointless, there is nowhere for weeds to root and nothing loose to migrate, so routine care is closer to cleaning a path than tending a drive.

The point of a smooth, sealed-pore surface is that dirt sits on top of it rather than working into gaps. A stiff broom lifts the everyday debris, and a hose or a gentle pressure wash clears the rest. Keeping on top of it little and often is far easier than letting grime build and then scrubbing it back, and it is what keeps the aggregate colour bright.

Now and then

Brush off leaves, blossom and grit before they break down and stain, especially in autumn and under trees.

Twice a year

Rinse the whole drive with a hose or a gentle pressure wash to clear settled dirt and keep the colour fresh.

As needed

Deal with spills quickly. Lift oil or fuel with an absorbent granule, then wash the spot, rather than leaving it to soak in.

Can you jet wash a resin driveway?

Yes, and it is the easiest way to freshen one up. A resin bound surface takes a domestic pressure washer comfortably, as long as you use a fan nozzle, keep it moving, and hold it back from the surface rather than drilling into one spot. Sensible technique matters more than raw power.

Most home pressure washers, in the region of 100 to 150 bar, are absolutely fine for a resin drive. The things that can mark any resin surface are a pin-point or turbo nozzle held still and close, which concentrates all that force on one patch. A wide fan tip held twenty centimetres or so away, swept steadily across the surface, cleans it evenly without stressing the resin.

Washing little and often beats an annual blitz, because you are lifting light dirt rather than blasting off ground-in grime. If you are ever unsure of the right setting for your particular drive, ask us: we would always rather talk it through than see a good surface marked by a turbo nozzle. These figures are general guidance; follow any specific advice we leave with your installation.

Jet washing, the safe way

  • Use a wide fan nozzle, never a pin-point or turbo tip
  • Hold it roughly 20 to 30 cm back from the surface
  • Keep moving; do not linger on one spot
  • A domestic washer around 100 to 150 bar is plenty
  • Rinse toward the edges to carry debris off the drive

How do you stop weeds, moss and algae?

Weeds are rarely a problem on resin bound at all, because there are no joints or gaps for a seed to take root in. Moss and algae can settle on any surface in damp shade, but they sit on top and lift off with a wash, so prevention is mostly about not letting debris and moisture linger.

This is one of the quiet advantages of a bound surface over block paving, where every joint is a seed bed. On resin bound, anything that does appear has blown in and settled on the surface rather than grown up through it, so a brush and a rinse clears it. Keeping the drive swept, and cutting back anything that drips or shades it, removes most of the damp that moss and algae need.

Where a green film does take hold in a shaded corner, a resin-safe patio or driveway cleaner clears it. Keep harsh neat bleach and solvent-based products off the surface, since those can lift the colour. The contrast with jointed paving is one reason so many people move to a bound surface in the first place, which we explain in resin bound vs resin bonded.

What are the common resin driveway problems, and how are they avoided?

The honest truth is that most resin driveway problems are laid in, not worn in. Loose stone, puddling, fading and cracking nearly always trace back to the mix, the base or the weather on the day, which means a careful installation prevents almost all of them before they start.

Problem Usual cause How it is avoided
Loose stone coming away Wrong resin-to-stone ratio, or laid in the cold or wet A correct mix laid in the right conditions binds every stone, so this points to the install rather than ordinary wear
Puddles that sit after rain A weak or over-compacted base that water cannot pass through A deep, open-graded sub-base lets water drain down, so a correctly built drive stays puddle-free
Colour fading or yellowing A cheap resin that is not UV-stable A UV-stable resin holds its colour in sunlight; it is the resin spec that prevents this
Cracking Movement in a failing base left underneath Sorting the base before laying, rather than skimming over a bad one, keeps the surface sound

That is why who lays the drive matters as much as the product. A correct resin-to-aggregate ratio, a properly built open-graded base, a UV-stable resin and the right weather window between them head off the whole list. You can read how the base is built to drain and last in our guide to permeable resin driveways and SuDS.

How is a resin driveway repaired if it is damaged?

Resin bound repairs cleanly. Because it is trowelled rather than laid in slabs, a damaged patch can be cut out and a fresh mix worked in to blend with the surrounding surface. Small marks and the odd loose area are straightforward; the key to an invisible repair is matching the original aggregate blend.

For a localised knock, say a dropped tool or a small area that was never bound properly, the affected section is cut back to a clean edge and re-laid with the same stone and resin. A fresh mix keys into the existing surface so the repair sits flush. The closer the aggregate match, the less you will ever see where it was.

That match is easiest when the installer has kept a record of your blend, which we do. If a repair is ever needed years down the line, we can return with the right aggregate rather than guessing at a colour. It is one more reason to have the drive laid by a specialist who will still be there afterwards, as part of the resin bound surfacing we install and stand behind.

Does it need resealing, and how often?

A quality resin bound driveway does not need routine resealing. The resin binds the stone all the way through, so there is no surface coat to wear off the way there is on some sealed finishes. An optional refresh coat is available years down the line, but it is a choice about appearance rather than a repair the surface depends on.

This trips people up, because block paving and some other surfaces do need periodic sealing to stay sound. Resin bound is different by construction: the colour and the binding are in the body of the surface rather than a top layer, so there is nothing routine to replace. Kept clean, a well-laid drive simply carries on, which is a large part of why it typically lasts 15 to 25 years.

If, after a long service, you want to lift a tired-looking surface, an optional clear refresh coat can restore some sheen and depth of colour. It is worth doing for looks on an older drive, and we are happy to advise whether yours would benefit. Indicative only.
